THE ESG REALITY IN IRELAND
ESG expectations are rising across Ireland: Even for companies outside mandatory CSRD scope.
Irish businesses are facing a new ESG reality. Even when reporting rules differ by company size, reliable sustainability data is becoming increasingly important for customers, banks, investors, and supply-chain partners.
For many SMEs, the challenge is structure: knowing which ESG data matters, which KPIs to collect, and how to prepare for VSME or ESRS reporting without a full internal sustainability team.
VSME · ESRS · CSRD
VSME, ESRS and CSRD in Ireland: Made understandable.
The Irish ESG reporting landscape is changing. CSRD has introduced more detailed sustainability reporting across the EU, including Ireland. At the same time, many SMEs are looking for a more proportionate way to communicate sustainability information.
The VSME standard offers a practical route for SMEs that need to respond to ESG data requests from customers, financial institutions, or supply-chain partners — without the full complexity of ESRS reporting.
What is CSRD?
The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive is the EU framework that significantly expands mandatory sustainability reporting. It applies in phases to larger companies and listed SMEs, requiring detailed disclosures based on the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS).
What is ESRS?
The European Sustainability Reporting Standards define the data points companies in scope of CSRD must disclose, covering environmental, social, and governance topics, plus a double-materiality assessment that identifies what is actually relevant to your business and stakeholders.
What is VSME?
The Voluntary Standard for SMEs is a lighter, proportionate sustainability reporting framework designed for small and medium-sized companies that want to disclose ESG information, typically in response to customer, bank, or supply-chain requests, without the full ESRS overhead.
Do Irish SMEs need ESG reporting?
Many Irish SMEs are not directly in scope of mandatory CSRD reporting, but they routinely receive ESG data requests from larger customers, banks, and supply-chain partners. A structured VSME report is often the most efficient way to answer those requests and stay commercially competitive.
